How this is calculated

Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100. Total = Bill + Tip. Per person = Total ÷ Number of people.

Assumptions

  • Tip is calculated on the amount you enter. Customs vary; check the receipt for an automatic service charge.

Estimates for planning and education only. Not financial, tax or legal advice, and not an official government calculation. Calculations run in your browser; nothing you enter is stored or sent.

How to use this calculator

Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people. Turn on rounding if you want everyone to pay a whole-dollar amount; the calculator shows the effective tip rate after rounding so you know exactly what you are leaving.

Tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides commonly suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small: on an $80 meal with 8% tax, an 18% tip is $14.40 before tax and $15.55 after tax. To split a bill with tax and tip itemized, use the split bill calculator.

Quick mental math

  • 10%: move the decimal one place left ($64.00 → $6.40).
  • 20%: double the 10% figure ($6.40 × 2 = $12.80).
  • 15%: 10% plus half of 10% ($6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60).

Frequently asked questions

Is the service charge on my bill a tip?

Not necessarily. Some restaurants add a service charge or "auto-gratuity" for large groups. Read the receipt or ask your server so you don't tip twice by accident.

How do I split a tip unevenly?

Calculate the total tip first, then divide it in proportion to what each person ordered. For most groups, an even split is close enough.
