How this is calculated

Tax = Subtotal × Tax %. Tip = Subtotal × Tip %. Each person pays (Subtotal + Tax + Tip) ÷ People, rounded to the cent; any leftover cent is noted.

Assumptions

  • Tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal; leftover cents are assigned to some people.

How to use this calculator

Enter the subtotal before tax and tip, your local sales tax rate, the tip percentage and the number of people. The tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. If the total does not divide evenly to the cent, the calculator tells you how many people need to pay one extra cent.

Splitting household bills is different

For rent and utilities shared by roommates or partners, an even split isn’t always fair, especially when incomes or room sizes differ. Our guide to splitting household bills fairly walks through even, proportional and room-size methods with examples.

Frequently asked questions

What if someone ordered much more than everyone else?

Itemize: add up each person's items, then add their share of tax and tip in the same proportion. For a quick fix, the person who ordered more can cover the tip.
